- NGC869 and NGC884 form the famous "Double
- Cluster", and is one of the "classic"
- examples of galactic clusters. A favorite
- for amateurs the wonderful pair may be
- seen with the naked eye. Use a low-power
- eyepiece to see both in the same field of
- view. The clusters were known as early
- as 150 BC, being mentioned by Ptolemy
- and other ancient astronomers. NGC869
- contains about 400 stars and NGC884
- around 300 stars. Each is about 70
- light-years across, with luminosities of
- about 200,000 suns.
